Here’s Something Weird…

I can’t believe I haven’t blogged about this before. It’s such a bizarre phenomenon. It all started almost a year ago.

Whenever I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night I invariably have to sneeze. Sometimes, if I’m patient, I can stand by the bed until the sneeze comes. But usually it’s only after I’ve snuggled down under the covers that sneezing occurs. And I am no dainty sneezer. Poor Dr. M - I’m sure I startle him awake (he’s been too polite to mention it).

I have tried to come up with explanations for this explosive dead of night sneezing. I thought maybe it was our laundry detergent, or dust on my nightstand. But we’ve had those same things for YEARS (I’m not much of a housekeeper, as you well know). AND I do the sneezing thing on vacations and at my dad’s house. It’s a mystery.

So I’ve finally decided that it can only be explained by one thing. As I approach peri-menopause I have developed an allergy to going back to bed once awakened. An allergy that is apparently not soothed by my nightly Claritin. I’m a little traumatized by the whole concept - one of the great pleasures of life is to wake at 3:00 in the morning, go to the bathroom, & realize that you have another 3 hours to sleep. What if this sneezing starts interfering with that? Is the answer to wear adult diapers & not have to get up? Will I start having sneeze induced insomnia?

Hi, my name is Bug, and I have a sneeze disorder.*

* I am being a tad overdramatic - I usually only sneeze once & then go right back to sleep. Still, weird, right?

  1. Too funny. I wonder if drainage or moisture pools there, and that's what actually wakes you up. ?

  2. I never sneeze just once. Always a minimum of three. Many times more. Lately I have been plagued with about 6 in a row of hearty explosive sneezes. What's up with that?

  3. Yep, it's weird. Maybe it's connected to your peeing? It's the nocturnal "pee sneeze".

  4. Yup. Weird. Alien weird, in fact, just alien weird! Babe, you oughta get that checked out, in fact.

  5. Dear The Bug,
I bet it does have to do with Dust, which makes me sneeze and not stop. Or, your sinuses change position upon the change of position from lying down to getting up to lying down again. Try washing your face with hot water (for the steam, you know) and using a Kleenex, even if you don't feel you need it.

The other thing, is it photo-reflexive? Doesn't sound like it, but you can always try not turning on bathroom light, too!! Don't trip on anything! That might be worse!

    Gesundheit!!

  6. hahahaha "sneeze-induced insomnia"
Well, Dana, we all have our odd little ways and if this is as bad as it gets, count yourself blessed! :)

  7. A change of temperature produces sneezing I have noticed.

  8. As Natalie says, changes in temperature. Do you sneeze at other times e.g. when coming in from the cold into the warm? I have that and it drives me crazy.

  9. Oh, you're sneezing up my tree. Not that I sneeze. But I wake up, every night, at 3AM. Most of the time I can't get back to sleep. 4:30 is OK, but 3? It's perimenopause for me too, I think. Now if I could sleep-graze all day, it would be fine.

  10. Now, if you can sneeze AND not tinkle on yourself... that is the challenge as you get on up into your forties...LOL!

  11. Dana - I know nothing about nocturnal sneezes so I'm afraid that I can't offer any possible explanations as to why. However, I can agree that you are, indeed, weird.

Hope you find that helpful! :o)

  12. Maybe there's something in the bathroom that's tickling your nose? There are lots of smells in there - some good, some not so good - and it might just be a delayed reaction.

Or maybe you're just crazy. (LOL)

  13. Do you ever sneeze so hard that you also fart? Dr. M might find THAT memorable enough to mention. :-)

  14. Interesting--as long as it doesn't bother you much.

  15. my friend does a little machine gun sneeze - never less than six or seven in one go. It could be some build up of dust etc - or it could just be that you've got into the habit

I remember seeing Record Breakers as a kid and they had the kid who'd broken the record for sneezing (something like 10 years) - he'd even tried inhaling burning cowpats to stop.

Not sure which would be worse!

  16. Weird, yes. I have to think it's somehow Claritin related but I don't know how. On the plus side, you sneeze after you go to the bathroom, not before, which, you know, could create some simultaneousness, if you know what I mean.

  17. That is strange but delightful.I love sneezing, even try to induce sometimes just for the fun.

Did you know there was a man from Wisconsin that sneezed so hard his head exploded, and his wife's too.
