Magpie Tales - A Different Grave

Here is the prompt for this week's Magpie Tale:

If you look closely (click on the picture to make it larger) you can see at the bottom what I think says Aged ?? Days. I might be totally wrong, but having gotten that in my head I couldn't get another poem out of my head. I wrote this last July after a trip to a cemetery - and, see, I have my own gravestone as a prompt. If you'd like to see the original post, click here. Anyway, since it won't be dislodged, here it is for your reading pleasure (pleasure's probably the wrong word, isn't it?).

Click on the picture if you aren't able to read the marker

Willie Died in the Morning

Willie died in the morning
Tiny loved not here
For long

I don't know when
I don't know why
But I know gone

Willie died in the morning
and his stone breaks
my heart

  2. Wow, Bug. What a perfect little found poem. It was indeed a pleasure to read, very touching and poignant. "Willie died in the morning" is the sweetest beginning to a poem. Thank you.

  4. What I love about the headstone is that in doing family genealogy I realize that so many women in our family lost so many of their children along the way (9 out of 14, etc.) and the only way most of them were remembered was in the family Bible. And yet, each of the babies' names were recorded. I wonder whether little Willie's parents decided to stay in that town afterward, rather than move on West...

In the first photo, you are right, it is "Aged" which was typical of headstones to give how long people lived. I don't know why, but they would often put years, months, days ... I guess the idea was that the more information they recorded would help that person to not be forgotten.

  6. This was eerie and sad...poor Willie, I hope there was some peace for the child. Nice poem though, even out of sadness a beautiful poem emerges.

  7. Yes I picked up the 'days' part too.

So sad but definitely a sign of those times which you captured so beautifully.

  8. Touching. Too many gravestones mark lives lost at wee ages. Willie's ode speaks for many.

  16. It always breaks my heart to see headstones like little Willie's. I like how the poem was short, a reflection of how short his life was too.

  17. We can only hope that he was taken at that moment in time to spare him of danger ahead had he not been taken away
    Good read! :) The Bach

2024 Project 365 – Week Twelve

I woke up not feeling well and skipped church (for the second week in a row - oops), but that doesn’t keep me from being deep in the throes ...
