In My Mind's Eye

In My Mind's Eye

In my mind’s eye one final time
I taste the garlic and the lime
I watch the hands prepare the feast
And feel again that kitchen peace
I know again that you are fine

I close my eyes against their shine
Behind my lids I cross the line
The fine thin line with no surcease
In my mind’s eye

I hear you humming and the chime
I feel your heart in synch with mine
I beat back the grasp of the beast
With the intimacy of grease
You haven’t left and so we dine
In my mind’s eye

This is a Magpie Tale and a One Shot Wednesday poem. Please head over to those sites to read some other tales!

  1. What a nice memory of moments spent in the kitchen together. Food and certain smells do hold strong memories!

  2. Lovely poem!
I like the 'intimacy of grease" in the kitchen, the smell of garlic, the sound of humming and heart beats.
I'm impressed by the rhyming and by emphasis on the poem's location - "in my mind's eye".

  5. Hi Dana - yes, I will certainly claim this for the Poetry Bus, though acknowledging its Magpie-ness too. A lovely rondeau with a beguiling undercurrent of sadness too.

  6. Oh, this makes me jealous!!!! I wanted to write a rondeau but couldn't pull it off, and here you have done it with such ease that it took me a minute to realize what I was reading. Bravo!

  8. Karen - it was actually pretty hard! I think I'm going to scan in my scribbling & post it on Saturday as one of my pictures of the day - it's a mess! For me the hard part is making the sentences seem natural - as if you would actually speak them - instead of forcing the rhyme - gah!

But thanks for liking it - I'll probably try again sometime because I enjoyed the challenge.

  9. What a great contrast you set up, between your comforting memory and fighting back 'the beast'

I really like how we get so many ideas out of one photo. Everyone interpreting it differently.

  13. Lovely evocative piece, a bit like garlic, delicious but can make the eyes water a little.
Kitchens are where most of our memories are, I thought of my mum today cooking pancakes for my kids for pancake Tuesday.
