Monday Miscellany - the Polka Edition

On Friday I emailed Dr. M & said, “I think we should go to Lake Erie this weekend.” So we did. We had a great time & I’m gonna tell you all about it. You have to look at my vacation pictures! Well, I guess technically you don’t have to, but I’m posting them anyway. And I’m going to do it two installments because it was just that much fun. Ha!

So the first thing that happened was that we drove through Yellow Springs, OH (because you kind of have to) & witnessed their weekly “Make Peace Not War” demonstration. There were a few more people than this, but I like the flag.

We decided to stay in a bargain hotel for a change and actually enjoyed it – even though I missed some of the perks of a Comfort Inn level chain. Like a clock in the room and a little lotion in the bathroom. But the beds were pretty comfortable and the rates were reasonable. I loved this sign on the door to the laundry room.

And then there was this. Here’s the view outside one of our windows.

And this is what was happening under that tent.

Yes, we stumbled onto The Perch, Peach, Pierogi & Polka festival. The good news is that we didn’t have to pay to get in to hear the band. The bad news is that we heard “Roll out the Barrel” at least four times. The other good news is that I can testify that the pierogies & peach cobbler were fantastic. Here’s the back deck of our hotel where we ate our bounty last night.

The other bad news is that they played until 10:00 each night. On the other hand it wasn’t all old polka standards. Last night I heard those great new polka songs, “The Electric Slide” and “Play that Funky Music White Boy.”

If you think we were annoyed, think again. We were highly amused and mostly enjoyed the music. And watching all the folks (most of them with snow white hair) dancing around the dance floor. My one regret is that I didn't get a picture of Dr. M dancing around the hotel room. Although he might have been doing a waltz instead of a polka. Heh.

Tomorrow I’ll write about our actual lake experience. Warning: there will be a lot of pictures in that post!

  1. Pictured above is Eddie Rodick's band...they were a lot of fun! Here's a sample from a few years back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksUCMwd4aGA

  2. This sounds like so much fun -- if you love polka music, which I do.

  3. Wow! I know perch, peach and even polka, but pierogi?!

And 'Play that Funky Music White Boy' is one of my favourite songs! Ever! (the non-polka version)

  6. I am SO jealous. I cannot remember the last time I had a real, honest-to-goodness homemade pierogi. Please tell me you had a sauerkraut one with lots and lots of sour cream and good, brown, sauteed onions. MMMMMmmmmmmmm.

And I heard about the P,P,P&P Fest on the Cleveland news. Rick and I almost went! Me for the pierogi and Rick for the perch. Alas, Other Things required our presence.

  7. OK, hearing a polka band play Play That Funky Music White Boy would have made my night!

    Can't wait to hear more.

    Hugs & love,

  8. What fun! A polka festival sounds like fun but I have no idea what pierogi is.

  9. A pierogi is a mashed potato filled dumpling - it's truly a carb delight :)

I don't like sauerkraut so I didn't have any of that, but I had plenty of fried onions to go with my pierogies!

  10. She had the plain ones with sauteed onions, Nance. I had the Polish sausage with sauerkraut and mustard. We shared the peach cobbler, sort of. I had a bite :-)

  11. Oh, this made me laugh.

We drove to Seattle and back staying in Mom and Pop's instead of the chains. Just have to venture off the highway. And we wouldn't eat at the chains along the way either. Wed ask at what ever small motel where the locals ate. Or for lunch we'd just pick some place at random. It was great fun with only one bad experience.

2024 Project 365 – Week Twelve

I woke up not feeling well and skipped church (for the second week in a row - oops), but that doesn’t keep me from being deep in the throes ...
