Grief and Great Joy

Big Room, 1948, by Andrew Wyeth

Grief and Great Joy

The rooms are almost empty.
It was a good place
to forge a career.
Time to move on.

Within these walls
I bottled a variety
of elixirs…

Grief and joy,
depression and apathy –
all stoppered and racked.

Sometimes the cork would fly
drenching us with some vintage
or other.

Today we leave the bottles behind.

This poem was written in 2009 - while Dr. M & I were moving away from the apartment where we had lived for 12 years.

This is a Magpie Tale.

  1. A little sad but there is SOME hope in there.

  2. It is bittersweet to move. I can see why you felt the way you did about leaving.

  3. one of the reasons it took us so long to move completely to the country house was not wanting to leave my house in the city. the city held nothing for me, but that was my house. I bought it when I was single, even before I met Marc. I raised my kids there. I had such deep roots. took a while to get them pulled up. I still miss that house though.

  4. Moving is often bittersweet, isn't it -- letting go of the past but embracing the future!

  5. Moving on is always filled with mixed emotions, isn't it?
    This captures that feeling.

  7. Wouldn't it be wonderful if only a person could leave all the bottles behind and move on? One or two vintages always seem to find their way back into your new place. Your poems are so meaningful and expressive, Dana. Thanks for sharing.

  14. Oh, moving is so painful. And you wouldn't want the bottles to crack in the moving van. So it's good to start again. Nice!
