Fill This Space

Here I am again with no clear plan about what to write. Well, I'll just do the random that I would have done yesterday if Mr. Dresden hadn't been so needy.

  • Speaking of Dresden - I finished the book about an hour ago (I am NOT a slow reader, but I actually had to work today). It was pretty good, but it gets three stars instead of the usual four I give to Dresden books. It was kind of talky and not as action-y as I like. I read Charles Frazier books for introspection - Harry Dresden is for things getting set on fire & saving people in distress. Now I'm making myself wait before I start the next one in the series (#14).
  • I think I've mentioned before that, in addition to horrible free Kindle downloads, my book club mostly reads young adult fiction. This month's selection is The Giver by Lois Lowry. Looks like it will be pretty good. I'll let you know what I think!
  • I'm watching Game 1 of the World Series right now. It's the first inning & Hunter Pence - that wild & crazy Matthew McConaughey look alike - just hit a home run. I can't decide who I'm pulling for. I have a lot of friends pulling for Kansas, so maybe to do them a favor I'll pull for San Francisco.
  • Direct TV seems to be single-handedly paying for post season baseball. And I have to say that I don't find non-creepy Rob Lowe to be any less creepy than creepy Rob Lowe. Dr. M does NOT have to worry about me fantasizing about either of them!
  • I'm back to eating real food now. Thank goodness! I was having trouble figuring out how to get my veggies in. I did have soup, but all that sodium...
OK, I'm behind again on reading blogs, so I'm heading over to Bloglovin now. What are you guys reading or watching or eating these days?

    2. Watching: Castle and The Good Wife...that's about all I have time for
    3. Eating: Right now, a Greek yogurt with pineapple. Generally, a lot of chocolate...my boss brought like 12 pounds of it to the office.

  3. Rooting for San Francisco, so close to where I grew up.

  4. Root for San Francisco! We live close by!

I can't offer much in the reading department... currently just reading a book that basically equates to the free kindle books.

Watching Elementary on DVD currently. If you like Sherlock Holmes you'll like Elementary!

    1. Sometimes a free kindle book is just the thing to soothe the stressed brain!

  6. still haven't finished the Goldfinch...I'll get there. Also, Introvert Power. I don't ever watch TV. I laughed at your Rob Lowe comment, lol. Glad you're back to real food again!

  7. "The Giver" is super popular in our library -- but I haven't read it yet. :)

  8. I'm reading the newest Stephanie Plum bounty hunter book. fluff is all I have the mind for these days. I only watch two TV shows...Agents of Shield and Once Upon A Time. We make our own soup by saving leftovers. Everything that isn't enough for two servings goes into the container in the freezer. then, it's soup!

    1. I read that a few weeks ago - it was pretty funny - but yes, very fluffy!

  9. I'm so disappointed in your disdain for Rob Lowe. He was one of my uberCrushes back in the 80s, and I rediscovered him during The West Wing. I still love him. And I love that he isn't afraid to be ugly and funny when he's so darn handsome.

    But okay. More for me.

I just got The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu by Dan Jurafsky. I haven't started it yet, but what I read of it and about it in a book review recently really piqued my interest.

Curious: why does your book club read teen books?

    1. Oh that Rob Lowe - too pretty for me :)

I joined an ongoing book club & that's what they were already doing. I think it's because they like them and they are usually shorter, which is a plus for busy professionals. We have read some other stuff too. But we usually drift back to YA.

  10. I just finished a Grisham novel: Sycamore Row. Now I'm reading Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. It's better than I thought at first. I just had to give it a chance. We haven't selected our next book for book club yet.

    1. I'll have to check out the Grisham book - I haven't read anything of his in a while.

  11. My comment got lost in cyberspace. I just got the new John Grisham so I'll start that soon.

Find another book club. Although The Giver is not just for young adults and is a good read that will provoke a good discussion. I've never seen a free Kindle book that was any good and cannot imagine a book club using those for selection. Guess you do get what you pay for. My book club just did "Someone" by Alice McDermott. Half the group loved it and half of the group was "so what?" I was in the "so what" group.

    1. Oh no - the free Kindle book is a joke book. We each get a different one (based on our birth months) & read it so that we can hilariously review them at our meeting. It's been the most fun :) Then we also have a "serious" book that we read. We just all really like YA fiction, but sometimes we do read other things.

    2. I love the idea of a joke book. It does sound like fun. And there is a lot to be said about YA. I used to steer clear of it but I have really enjoyed some of them the past couple of years. I especially liked "The Fault in our Stars." And I liked the first of the Hunger Games trilogy. And I do love Neil Gaiman.

2024 Project 365 – Week Twelve

I woke up not feeling well and skipped church (for the second week in a row - oops), but that doesn’t keep me from being deep in the throes ...
