Fen Rambling...

In my last post I promised a surprise & then completely forgot about it. Last Sunday, Dr. M & I went to Siebenthaler Fen for a walk. It was such a beautiful day! And there was plenty to see. I took a few pictures, but luckily for you, Dr. M brought along the "real" camera.

Tree swallow

Red-winged blackbird

Turkey vulture

Red-bellied woodpecker

Marsh marigolds

Pussy willow (and bee)

Skunk cabbage (isn't it the most bizarre thing?)

Wild cherry

Till next time...

  1. The photos of the marsh marigolds remind me of smiley faces. The wild cherry blossoms are beautiful!

And yes...what is it with skunk cabbage? Like, how did it get its name? And is it edible?

    1. I know nothing about skunk cabbage - I should research it & do a post!

  3. Too many people think fens are only for late spring through autumn. As the photographs show so beautifully, there are wonders to behold in any season if only you look. Loved this post.

I'm watching the NCAA game and you'd better not be cheering for Syracuse. TarHeels are doing well here in the early stages. If it gets too close, I'll have to turn it off and catch the scores in the morning.

    1. That game was insane! I didn't really watch, but I could hear it from the other room. So sorry that I ended up pulling for the TarHeels - I'm a jinx!

  4. Our fens are still too wet and flooded from rain and snow melts. Snow has been off and on falling for a couple of weeks. Great bird and bee captures Dr. M. I love the very bright yellow of the Marsh Marigolds. Thank you for sharing a little spring from your neck of the woods.

    1. I'm always concerned that the fen will be too wet - & sometimes it is - but we got lucky this time.

  5. That skunk cabbage IS weird. Looks like something from Star Trek! And I love that graffiti in the last shot...:)

What did that man-eating plant say in The Little Shop of Horrors?
That is what it reminded me of.

  8. Loved the venture into the fen. Thank you both so much for those gorgeous photos. Can you eat skunk cabbage? Does it have a bad smell?

    1. I didn't smell it from where I was standing, but the name had to come from somewhere, right? I shall do some research.

2024 Project 365 – Week Twelve

I woke up not feeling well and skipped church (for the second week in a row - oops), but that doesn’t keep me from being deep in the throes ...
