Life in the Village

I’ve never been much of one to believe that God intervenes in the minute details of our lives (although, more than once, I’ve been sure that God put a slow driver in front of me to keep me safe). But over and over I’ve thought and heard it said that we are here in NC, now, at the precise time we need to be. God-ordained? Dumb luck? Serendipity? I’m not sure (keep in mind that my faith doesn’t depend on God helping me get a good parking spot). But, for all kinds of reasons, I am sure glad that we are here, now.

Our neighbor's dog, Roy, had to come see us off last night.
He loves Dr. M - we'll, it's a mutual love affair.
My tentative surgery date is August 21 (oops I originally put it a month later than that!). That’s almost three months away. I felt a bit weepy after I got off the phone with the scheduler. The process of leaving the house to go anywhere is so exhausting that I was afraid I’d just give up and be house bound all summer.

But I WILL NOT. I’ll go to my Weight Watcher’s meeting, and to the nursing home to sing with my dad, and to church, and to anyone’s house who wants to feed me (ha). I’ll be tired and out of sorts, but for heaven’s sake, other people live with debilitating conditions that they will never get over – I think I can deal for three months. But please keep Dr. M in your thoughts as he has to shoulder most of the domestic tasks for now.

Last night, we went to Dr. M’s brother’s house for a birthday dinner for their 85 year old father. Among other things, his wife fixed potato salad & deviled eggs – a splendid mid-week bonus meal. Angel food cake with strawberries for dessert – yum! And it was a simple matter of driving a few miles and showing up at their door at the appointed hour. I’m so glad we can do things like that now. And we even came home with eggs from their chickens. Today, Dr. M will take his dad to the doctor.

We all need a village sometimes. I’m glad we’ve come home to ours.

  2. I'm glad you are surrounded by people that are your village right now... & after your surgery. You'll need them even more then.
3 months will be here before you know it - truly. Start the countdown chart!!!

  3. I agree, you're in the best place possible for the current situation you're in. Here's hoping the next three months will pass quickly and comfortably.

Did they give you anything to deal with any pain in the meantime?

Make sure you get lots of Vitamin C before the surgery - bodies heal much better when they don't lack this vitamin.

  4. Oh, my. I suspect we're a bit alike in wanting to get such things over with, already. But just think -- three months is only twelve weeks. Somehow, time seems to pass more quickly when I think of it in week-sized chunks.

Those are good looking eggs. Are they the sort that are colored, like blue and green? Or is that just the lighting?

By the way -- which of your email addresses is the right one now. The gmail?

  5. I'm sorry you're having a rough time of it. I like to get things behind me as quickly as possible, so I know how you feel. I'm glad you have people around who care about you. Your biggest priority for the next three months is to take care of yourself. You want to be in the best shape possible when you get this done. :)

  7. I'm glad too. Having a support network is a very important thing. (And you've reminded me that my own inconsequential blog-whining needs to be kept in perspective.)

  8. I want to be able to say something Very Wise And Helpful, but the truth is that you only have to get through each day one at a time. Some will be crappy and some will not. I'm hoping you have more of the Not.

  9. I think I've said it before but you are fortunate to be around family and good friends as you go through this stuff.

Thanks for stopping by - I'd love to hear what you have to say!

2024 Project 365 – Week Twelve

I woke up not feeling well and skipped church (for the second week in a row - oops), but that doesn’t keep me from being deep in the throes ...
