Thankful Thursday

This morning I made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon, for May 19th. My hip has been bothering me for a while – getting worse and worse until last weekend I started using my cane again, and then, all of a sudden, I just couldn’t really walk unassisted. Dr. M pulled my walker out of storage and I’ve become reacquainted with what a pain in the ass it is to try to do anything while using a walker.

My hip resurfacing surgery was almost 6 years ago, and should have lasted for another number of years. However, I never really did come all the way back from it. I had days where I was pain free, but they were punctuated by days where I was not pain free. Now I wonder if perhaps the device was never quite right, or if I did something to mess things up in there. Who knows, but I do know that I always expected to have a total hip replacement someday. Maybe not this soon. And maybe the surgeon will not recommend surgery. We shall see.

But I’m really thankful:

  •  We didn’t give the walker away all those times that we could have.
  • Our new house is so much bigger than our Ohio house – I can maneuver through it with relative ease.
  • We live near family and I know that if we really need help we can get it.
  • I am able to work from home & fully expect to continue to work during any recovery (except for maybe I won’t try to work while I’m on narcotics).
  • I can go out on our back deck with ease, and enjoy a lovely spring day in North Carolina.
  • And penguins are nigh, so life is pretty good, all things considered.

  3. I am sad to hear about all the pain you have suffered. I am hopeful that the treatments you get in the immediate future will help to extinguish your pain as much as possible for good. I am keeping you in my prayers with hopes you will have a bright, pain free future through the coming years. I am sending love to you and J Michael, Dana. I am inspired by the way you two focus on the highlights of your life and that you choose to dwell in the sunshine. Me too.

  5. I hope you don't need that hip replacement at this time, but if you do I hope it goes smoothly and you can get back to normal, pain free, ASAP.

  7. Hoping for good news for you, whatever form it may take. And at least you don't crochet with your feet!

  9. I laughed at the comment about you not crocheting with your feet. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a "quick fix" that would make surgery unnecessary? Even if it ends up that surgery is on the schedule, I know you'll do just fine. It's great that so many good things have come together to make things easier: family, working from home, new house, and all that.

My friends and I have communal walkers that we pass around, as needed. One's the standard, U-shaped gizmo, and one is the kind with wheels and a seat. Oh, and a basket. So far, so good. We're hoping we never come to the point where two people want the wheeled one at the same time!

    1. Thank you! Just...thank you for understanding. I don't know that we can avoid surgery, but we are much better situated this time to endure it. And communal walker sounds good... <3

  11. And, as I pointed out and was reassured on Facebook, you live with a man who can and does cook!

  12. Ugh! Sorry about the hip. I hope surgery isn't necessary and there's another solution. Being able to move around the bigger house more easily is nothing to sneeze at!

  13. So sorry to hear about your pain. Like almost everything else, the second surgery and recovery will be better because you know pretty much what to expect. And procedures have improved markedly since your last surgery. If surgery is going to be the option, make certain to ask what pre-op exercises you can do and then do them religiously. That will make a tremendous difference in the speed of your recovery.

If therapy is the option, ask your doctor to recommend a therapy group. And keep in mind that many of us in the blogger world will be thinking good thoughts for you.

  15. I'm sorry you've had to deal with so much pain all these years. It speaks to you that you've always kept a cheerful, positive attitude. I hope that whatever treatment the surgeon recommends, it will happen soon and will be a permanent solution to end the pain.

Keep us posted - we're all rooting for you!

  16. I tend to think that perhaps the first surgery wasn't done best. especially since you haven't been pain free and it was supposed to last longer. you are definitely in an improved situation though. and everyone I know who has had hip replacement surgery are very happy they did it but I think I've told you that before.
