Monday Miscellany

It’s the return of Monday Miscellany! Please note, that all previous Mondays were just as miscellaneous as if they had also been written about.

First of all, I wanted to answer the question about the volunteer tomato plant (I keep forgetting to answer it in the comments of Saturday’s post). We did have tomatoes growing in that bed last year, so this must be from one that fell off the vine. I can’t wait to see how it does!

We saw our new nocturnal visitor again last night. She’s awfully cute in an “I’m-not-going-anywhere-near-her kind of way.” We’ve named her Skunky, and we hope she’s just chunky & not “with kit.” (Yes, I did go to the google to find out what you call a baby skunk).

I started a new crochet project over the weekend. Oh my head! I must have unraveled the thing about five times (I lost count). I think I might be on the right track now, but we’ll see how it looks when I’m done. It’s supposed to be a hat. Supposed to be.

I had a revelation about myself yesterday. Although I hate to get out of bed in the mornings, once I’m up, I’m wide awake & ready for action. Drives Dr. M crazy (he’s of the don’t talk to me until I’ve had a pot of coffee ilk). I’ve often wondered why I’m so chatty at home. I’m supposed to be an introvert for heaven’s sake. Yesterday I realized that I’m talking to myself – Dr. M is just there to keep me from looking crazy. When he reads this he’s going to think that everything is clear now. I don’t think he’ll be any less annoyed though.

I’ve at long last reached the conclusion that my hair is not straight. I’ve said it was straight for years, but it’s time for it to come out of the closet. It’s not wavy either. It’s really just bendy (and yes, that analogy is making me uncomfortable too, so forget I mentioned any closet). What I want to know is, where are the hair products for bendy hair? They probably already exist and I just don’t know about them. I already use this and it’s amazing (thanks Nurse Rudee), but my hair still looks straggly by the end of the day. Perhaps some shellac is in order…

OK, that’s enough miscellany for now. Have a great day!

  2. I love the idea of "bendy" hair. Since I always thought my hair was straight, and it's turned out to be curly on top, I totally identify! I've started using John Freida creme to combat the frizzies, but don't know if you need that either.

  3. I find with my curly hair, it helps to either embrace the waves, or plug in the flat iron. With my hair growing out, these days I go either way.

Nora Ephron has discussed many things in her writings, but in her book, "I Feel Bad About My Neck", she has discussed her hair in detail. She solved her hair problem by going to the salon a couple of times a week and letting a stylist tackle her problem. Of course, when you're a wildly successful writer like her, you can afford a twice weekly visit to a NYC salon. The rest of us must find another way.

I shall ask my hair guru (my daughter) what she suggests. My guess is, some kind of smoothing and heat reactive serum, followed by a flat iron that achieves a temperature of at least 400 to 450 degrees.

You may want to invest in burn balm.

  4. I should have said that I want a solution that doesn't involve heat in any way - I'm too lazy for that! I'm thinking a pixie cut may be in order :)

  6. If you don't like your hair you can always cover it with your new hat. :) In your photos you always have great hair...I think. Sometimes we just get tired of our hair. Like me...last week. I gave myself a home perm. I like it for now...but in a few weeks..I will probably change it.
(My perm smells something like a skunk)

  7. Thanks for letting us know re. that tomato plant. I hope Skunky IS with kit. How cool would that be, having a little skunk around?

  9. Glad we don't get skunks around here! I have straw hair - not the colour, but the general lack of swing. I haven't even got bendy hair. I think you could carry off a pixie cut easily.

  10. I've got bendy hair too. I hate having to use lots of products, life is too short, so I find trying different shampoos does make a difference.
I do a lot of talking to myself too, while hubbie pretends he's listening, in fact, I think that's why I write:)

  11. Maybe it's just a cat who had a run-in with the road striper ... although that's not much better, because you'll have a french real skunk around soon enough anyway.

  12. We live a few blocks away from the river and get a lot of wildlife, including raccoons, possums, and skunks. The skunks are cute, but what horrible pests. Trust me, you don't want a family anywhere near you, and they do have a tendency to find a hospitable place and return year after year. We have to scatter moth balls to fend them off. They can also do some damage as they look for edible grubs and other bugs. Sigh. I hope your skunk stays away!

  13. When SWMBO and I first got together I used to drive her crazy. She wakes up like Michael. I wake up happy. Well, I used to. But I'd be singing and cracking jokes and she'd be looking for something sharp. Guess we happy ones are just something the others have to put up with.

  14. I have bendy hair, too, and I'm stealing that description.

I'm always talking to myself. H never listens. He could learn so much if he was inclined.

  16. I'm more like Dr. M in the morning. In fact, after 30+ years of marriage I finally just told my husband, 'GIVE ME SOME SPACE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING'. Not sure why he never noticed, but I need to eeeeaaaase into the day sloooooowly. Not that he's Miss Chatty Cathy first thing, but he does tend to be like you, slow getting up but once he's up he's ready to bound into the day! hahaha

  17. Monday Miscellany? OMgosh - it's Thursday, for heaven's sake. I have got to do better!

I've never seen a live skunk, though I've seen plenty of them - uh - decorating the middle of the road. Possums are my thing. Every time I turn around I seem to be in the company of one. Big, small, slow, waddley. They're sort of cute, in an ugly kind of way. But they don't cause trouble - not the kind of trouble a skunk can!

My mom was the great unraveler. She wore the fuzz off yarn now and then in her search for perfection. Don't un-fuzz your yarn!

The best product for bendy hair? I've been using it for years - Aveda flax seed/aloe strong hold sculpturing gel. I buy it on the internet. It's a little pricey, but it comes in sets of two bottles, and lasts forever. I know my last purchase has lasted well over a year - I might even be closing in on two year. Good stuff. It adds a little volume, too - good for old ladies like me who are noticing a little thinning going on!
