Krispy Kreme

On Saturday I went to the 80th birthday party for my mom's best friend. The food table had a plate of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, which made me smile & brought back a flood of memories. Mom & Sue were absolutely hilarious to hang out with – they truly were Lucy & Ethel to me. I used to go to concerts & shopping with them in Charlotte NC, about an hour from our home. Each trip was a total blast, and always ended with swinging by the doughnut shop on the way home. The fact that you couldn’t really get there without making several illegal u-turns was no impediment to my mother. I wrote this poem about the experience a while back. Sorry for those who have already read it.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

It’s midnight and I’m
sitting in the back seat
holding on for dear life.
“Hey Mom – I’m not too
sure this is a good idea!”
But Lucy & Ethel just
laugh maniacally as we
career through those
dark Charlotte streets
making illegal U-turns
in our quest for the coda
of our concert experience.
I’ll take a half dozen
chocolate covered
kreme filled please
and eat them all by myself
in that back seat cocoon,
ignoring the further
traffic law defying
antics of Lucy and Ethel.
I’m humming Islands in the Stream
and wondering if that cute
lead singer for Sawyer Brown
is really as short as he looks.

Sue and Mom

  1. Krispy Kremes are not my favorite donut. I'm a Dunkin' Donuts gal.

  2. Krispy Kremes are not good for you. But they're so darned delicious!

  3. How sweet this post is. It reminds me of my mother and Miss Franny, her dear friend who lived up the street from us. And do I love Krispy Kreme Doughnuts or what?!? Yes, I do. I hadn't had them in years, but when we went to Myrtle Beach this summer, I spied a Krispy Kreme on around the corner from our hotel, and I had to get some. They are so bad but so good.

  4. Krispy Kreme left Houston for no good reason at all, and I finally adjusted. Now, you've brought it all back, so I went to have a look. Lo and behold, there's a store just seventeen miles away that I can get to without having to drive all the way into Houston. After I get my first ten pounds off, I'm going to go up there and get myself one. Two. Well, maybe three.

  5. Paula Deen has a recipe for bread pudding but she uses Krispy Kreme doughnuts instead of bread. There must be a thousand calories per serving but as she famously said, "I'm your cook, not your doctor."

  6. I like Dunkin' Donuts more than Krispy Kreme, but every so often, one of the engineers brings KK donuts into work. Can't turn down free donuts!

Thanks for stopping by - I'd love to hear what you have to say!
