2017 Project 365 – Week Five

We spent most of this week in North Carolina. So far, I love our new home & living so close to family. As you might expect, I’m back to my bad habit of posting way more than one picture per day. Don’t worry – that won’t happen every week!
Sunday, January 29th
We (meaning Dr. M), packed late into the evening.

Monday, January 30th
I just got one picture of the interior of the truck – looking pretty typical for us. We got a bigger truck than we really needed because it was the same price as the smaller one, and came with a ramp. If we'd had about four more people helping we probably could have filled it up.

Dr. M set off down the road about 40 minutes before I did. He took these pictures. I was a good girl and did NOT try to take pictures. (Actually, I was so involved in my audio book that I barely knew I was driving. Oops!)

Tuesday, January 31st
We signed the lease on the new house today & I took random photos of things that I found interesting – like the radio/cassette sound system (plays in the living area & the bedroom), and this super fabulous floor lamp!

Wednesday, February 1st
We unloaded the truck today. Dr. M & my 76 year old father did most of the heavy lifting. (OK, they did ALL the heavy lifting). My dad’s a hoss! His new fiancé, Sue, helped a lot too!

I was feeling pretty pleased about being in NC instead of Ohio. When we were loading the truck on Sunday it was spitting snow! This was a nice change.

Thursday, February 2nd
Dr. M spent some time bird watching – female cardinal and male yellow bellied sap sucker. We LOVE this tree in our back yard! We’re about 99% sure that it’s a white oak, but we’ll see what its leaves tell us in the spring. I didn’t take a picture of it, but we have a nice deck where I think Dr. M will probably just live all the time.

Friday, February 3rd
We built a little fire in our fireplace. Dr. M is going to enjoy messing with it, since the fire pit went to the great pit in the sky.

Saturday, February 4th
We drove back to Ohio today. I almost wrote “home” – and I guess it still is for a few more weeks. I still love “Our Ohio.”

Hope everyone has a great week! (P.S. I haven’t read blogs in a while. We didn't have internet at the house, and very spotty cell reception. Hopefully I’ll get around to everyone sometime.)

  1. Moving is hard work and a stressful time, but it also is very exciting to start fresh somewhere else! I've been thinking of you guys all week.

I'm still befuddled about your lamp. Did you know that Cranky (http://joeh-crankyoldman.blogspot.com/) featured it in his January 31 post???

    1. It's quite the lamp! it is tied to the wall to keep it from tipping over.

  2. Are you living in Newton, NC, now? If that's right, it's quite a coincidence. I was born and raised in Newton, Iowa, and still am right fond of the place.
I like your new place, too. I've never been in the southeastern states, but the country is so appealing. I'm glad things are clicking along for you. One step at a time, as they say.

    1. Quite a coincidence! Yes, our new address is Newton, NC, although the community is called Plateau, pronounced Plat-taw, lol.

  3. Back when my wife and I moved into our first house from the one-bedroom apartment we lived the U-Haul truck that was rented should have been more than enough to transport our stuff. I was surprised to learn that I had to make two trips to move us completely out. Never would have guessed we had that much junk.

    1. We are trying desperately to cull stuff, but we still have SO much junk!

  4. I'm glad you're having a positive moving experience. (And envious of those balmy temps!)

    1. Catawba County, NC, isn't NEO, nor is it Xenia. Our bones long for warmer temps, truly. Though I have loved living here on the hem of the Lone Prairie, I pine for the red clay of home.

  5. I like that last shot. when we moved it took a while to call the new place home. it was made tougher because after we actually moved all the way into the country house we were still driving into the city house weekly (when we had work) for four more years.

    1. Ohio is quite a beautiful state and we will miss it very much. We've lived here for 20 years, and it has been a good home. But I am very, very excited to be returning to the Blue Ridge foothills. We are very tired of the long drive and the disconnect we feel from our friends and family.

  6. I'm glad you're getting settled in the new abode. That cassette player is kind of cool and retro at the same time! Enjoy your last weeks in Ohio.

    1. Thanks, Steve! I dig the retro cassette player. The FM stereo works, but it is like returning to the days of my youth as I try to find stations on a pre-digitial tuner, lol!

  7. I hope the new location works out well for both of you. Take care.

  9. I can tell you're feeling good about this move. It's kind of exciting. I love your new digs. You know how I like a one-story house. You'll be there in time for spring and the birds and squirrels, and I know your family will be thrilled to have you back home. Good packing, Dr. M. I like the Santa hat on the rocking horse. Nice touch! Not just anyone can pack a whimsical truck.

    1. Thank you! My dad made that horse back when he was able to do woodworking. I named it Charlie, lol. We have a smaller one, too...named it Chip. I have the whimsical kung fu.

  10. I was just looking at the map and saw that Newton is only 19 miles south of Taylorsville and since my last name is Taylor little facts like that always mean a lot to me. Enjoy your new home, your new climate and your new life! (And visit Taylorsville!)

    1. Yep, Taylorsville is just up the hill a bit! I'm sure we will visit and post pics. Thanks, my friend!

  11. Nothin' could be finer than to be in Carolina in the mornin'

The house looks perfect and I can understand why you love it so much. Hooray for trees and birds. I know you will be glad when the move is totally complete and everything is in place. Best of luck!

  12. This is so exciting, but lots of other emotions. You seem to be handling it all well, at least what I can glean from the internet. 😉 NC seems like a lovely place to land and your new house looks like it'll be just right. Enjoy!

  13. Travel and transition theme-->mixed emotions.
Positives that come to mind: the process of sorting and pacing can bring back lot of memories and the unearthing of treasures from the past; the anticipation and expectancy of a new life and adventures!
    Blessings!

2024 Project 365 – Week Twelve

I woke up not feeling well and skipped church (for the second week in a row - oops), but that doesn’t keep me from being deep in the throes ...
