Once again, I’ve got nothing here. Let’s just dive into the photos.
Sunday, March 3rd
My birthday! Here are my birthday flowers from Dr. M (which are gorgeous), and the aforementioned cake from church. It was good!
I went to brunch with
friends and took no photos of other people. I felt it was more important to
take a photo of my livermush benedict and peach cobbler. Yes, I know I had just
had a slice of chocolate cake.
Monday, March 4th
Dr. M caught this bluebird taking a bath. Makes me smile.
Tuesday, March 5th
That feeling when you wear a sweater and everyone thinks you made it (I did not).
Wednesday, March 6th
Choir practice. We’ll see how long I keep it up this time (last time I got COVID almost right away & couldn’t really sing for several months).
Thursday, March 7th
My office smelled extra eggy this morning (from my breakfast sandwich) so I grabbed this & it made me wonder what would happen if we just went around spraying it at people until they decided that caring for people in the margins is a better idea than whatever it is that we’re doing now. Who’s with me?

Walked downtown to a shoe store in the square, got my feet measured, purchased new walking shoes, & walked back to work in less than half an hour.
Friday, March 8th
Came home to chaos. Was this a lemming situation? Cowabunga? A metaphor for the political landscape right now? But seriously I think I need a better yarn containment situation.
Made my mom’s version of Fruit Cocktail cake for a church potluck & it was a slice of bliss from my childhood. So good! Also, vaniall forever
It’s a gorgeous day here and after I got home from church I spent some time cleaning out the wildflower bed. Now my arms are noodles. I think I need to start doing some arm workouts. Wait, this sounds familiar. I think I do this every year. Maybe one year I’ll actually do it! What do you wish you would actually do?
After I stopped gagging, I decided I had to learn something about livermush. Here's what the venerable Wiki says: "It is a regional cuisine that is commonly found in the western part of North Carolina, as well as being noticeably present in central North Carolina. It is also consumed in other parts of the state, and is available in some areas in other states as well, such as Georgia, Virginia and Florida. Livermush is mass-produced in Shelby, North Carolina by two meat packing companies, Jenkins Foods and Mack’s Liver Mush and Meat Co., who distribute it to various states."
ReplyDeleteOK, then. I see there's even a livermush festival (of course) and that it's beginning to show up on things like pizza. Still: livermush Benedict? If you like it, carry on!
And happy belated birthday. That's one fine looking chocolate cake, for sure. I was interested in the recipe for the fruit cocktail cake. I remember my mother making it; I wonder if it wasn't one of those passalong recipes so popular in the 50s and 60s. That said, the list of ingredients makes it a no-go for me. Look at all that sugar!
I laughed at the yarn. My mother kept much of hers in a repurposed chest freezer, and I once wrote an etheree about supplies kept in a repurposed fridge.
I think livermush evolved from the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) influence in western North Carolina and beyond. Corn grows well here, and hogs could be fattened in the fall on acorns, etc. They of necessity tried to minimize waste, so they concocted a type of liver pudding using corn meal. Further east, it is called liver pudding and it contains more flour than our mush. Jenkins is Dana's favorite brand!
DeleteOoo - maybe I need a repurposed chest freezer! On the other hand, I can see me diving in to find something, falling in, and having get Dr. M to help me out. Ha!
Deletewell then of course I had to google it to see what it's made of and now I wish I hadn't. pig liver, pig head parts such as snouts and ears, cornmeal and seasonings. each to their own.
ReplyDeletewhipped warm sugar shea butter? is that supposed to be the scent?
It kind of smells like a sugar cookie. Which is an exquisite bit of torture. Ha!
DeleteI would not be able to eat at that restaurant once I saw that menu and its apostrophe error. Grrrrrrrrrr.
ReplyDeleteWe've had the Livermush/Scrapple Discussion before. No judgement here.
Why would an air freshener need shea butter? Isn't that primarily a moisturizing ingredient?
I'm falling down on the job - I didn't even notice the error! Oof.
DeleteI wondered the same thing about the air freshener. Maybe I should have sprayed it on my arms & legs. :)
