It Gets Better
Now, in this mirror
you see brokenness.
Maybe you believe
abomination.
Maybe you believe
nothingness
is a cool balm
for torment.
But look again
at your fractured
reflection.
It’s the mirror
that’s broken
not you.
The Bug (who is wearing purple today for gay teens)
10/20/10
The YouTube project called “It Gets Better” is a noble effort to help save the many young gay and questioning children and teenagers out there right now who are struggling, who are contemplating suicide. The project tries to show those “despairing LGBT kids who are being bullied and harassed, kids who don’t think they have a future” that adults who were in their same situation as them have endured and emerged in a safer, happier place. They are examples that life goes on, that situations do improve. From the Being Blog.

ReplyDeletethat is such a compassionate and tender piece Bug. Thankyou for all the kids who need that kindness.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteI too am wearing purple and so is most all of the high school where I work.
I've found that our flaws only make us more interesting, not broken.
ReplyDelete(My mirror is a fun-house mirror!)
Nice One Shot, Bug!
Thank you for sharing your poem with us. My daughter went to school in head to toe purple today (yes, she has purple jeans...). I missed the purple memo so I thought she was just being weird. I will be putting a purple ribon on my door when I get home.
ReplyDeleteA very important distinction to make on what is distorting our senses, our appearance. Nice one shot.
ReplyDeleteCool poem, your Bugness!
ReplyDeleteLoved the ending.Very thoughtful!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE this one!
Ha! Apparently anything between < and > doesn't get printed. There was a STANDING OVATION in there!
ReplyDeleteGreat ending Bug. I saw on face book about wearing purple today. I did not go out today so just had sloppy clothes on... but my thoughts were with supportive.
ReplyDeleteDidn't say my last post correctly...I meant my support was there even though I did not wear purple.
ReplyDeleteAmazing post!
ReplyDeleteI wore my purple today!
What a great statement. We look at others and point and stare when all the time it's us!!!
ReplyDeleteNice poem for One Shot
We would love to invite you to submit to our competition. Unfortunately it ends this Friday.

ReplyDeleteU r so, so right. Smtimes u lk at smthing & focus on the wrong thing in that pic, so what u c is a falsehood.
ReplyDeleteIt's the mirror that's broken not you! Perfect line. Perfect for today. (I wore my purple too.)
ReplyDeleteBut is it blemished, or just we are broken only a tad...
ReplyDeleteNice piece.
Mirrors only reflect outer appearances - it's the inner ones that count. :)
ReplyDelete( I wear purple lots - just because I like it - never heard of wearing it for any other reason, but I would have today, if I'd known!)
Very good...its most of the times we identify ourselves with the things that happen around us, paining us but not knowing that this is not happening to us but to the self image that we have created... nice end to a great verse... I liked it so much...

So much around us is broken, sometimes we forget our capacity to heal.

ReplyDeleteSo smart and touching..we all need to be built up!
ReplyDeleteThat was a wonderful, timely and heartfelt piece, Bug. I really hope the message was broadcast loud and clear. Up with tolerance, love and acceptance :-) As it happens, I'm almost always wearing purple, as it's my favorite color.
ReplyDeleteI love what people can do, when they band together to do something kind.
I loved 'it's the mirror that's broken, not you' - wonderful writing, I really enjoyed reading this. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy Magpie

ReplyDeleteIt’s the mirror

"Maybe you believe nothingness
ReplyDeleteis a cool balm for torment."
Powerful line, Bug.
"Abomination" must be the word of the day in the Bug/Linthead household! Love it.
stunning.
ReplyDeleteflaws make you unique.
Suicide is always terrible, but even more tragic when it's a young person. Good message!
ReplyDeleteExemplary use of symbolism to signal reassurance. Strong work.
ReplyDelete"It's the mirror that's broken, not you."
