Tattered
A flag flutters
in the breeze -
its tattered edges
no better kept
than my
ragged soul.
I could preach
about respect,
but that’s the
conundrum, isn’t it?
What do I know
about reverence?
And so I look away
instead of inside.
Let’s just keep
stirring the pieces
in the box so that
we never have to see
the unbroken picture.

smiles...i like your close...so you never have to see the unbroken picture...seems the conundrum itself as it would seem better than the broken...
ReplyDeleteIt's always hard to look within, however, I think the bigger picture is one seen better when whole.
ReplyDeleteI especially like this one. :))))
ReplyDeleteVery well put! :)
ReplyDelete... or find that there's a piece missing - how dreadful would that be! Love this response to the Magpie prompt, and a great One Shot too.
ReplyDeletei could preach about respect...was the line which striked me most...great close as well..
ReplyDelete'And so I look away instead of inside', how many times have we each done that? I love this poem, it's gentle, honest strength.
ReplyDeleteYou are a great poet, my love. You always have been, but lately...wow.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this one.. its good one shot. Specially the ending..

nice work. I'm like socks, my favorite line "and so I look away. . ." don't we all do that. love the tone, quiet, reflective. . .

Avoidance ... better to take a peek, no matter how difficult.
ReplyDeleteLittle, leaves us more ragged than denial. I like this.

This really captures those uncomfortable moments we have in life. We are still left with the nagging feeling even when we look away. Enjoyed this :)
ReplyDeleteSeeing the bigger picture sometimes helps with the missing pieces - in life, as in jigsaws!
ReplyDeleteDeliciously introspective.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHugs & love,
Mimi
Wonderful - I love stirring the pieces in the box (a form of avoidance) and tattered edges of a ragged soul. So very nicely done!
ReplyDeleteYour poetry is even stronger with every poem you write, Dana.
ReplyDeleteYou and I went down a similar path with this magpie. I really enjoyed your path. I am curious if you will like mine?
ReplyDeleteWow! This one really speaks. It isn't easy to look inward sometimes. Sometimes we'll do just about anything to avoid it.
ReplyDeleteholy moly I loved this!
ReplyDeleteyou brought it on home!
You know, I recently saw a very tattered American flag, and thought of respect. Nice piece, Bug.
